Still a Reality for Women in Science: Prejudice, Discrimination, and Underrepresentation
Act Today, Shape Tomorrow
We at RWTH Aachen University are committed to fostering a culture of gender equality in science and research. As a progressive, inclusive institution, we’re taking proactive steps to create a more equitable future. We are driving cultural change and fostering an inclusive working environment that encourages discourse and promotes respectful cooperation. While we’ve made significant progress, our journey continues. We remain dedicated to providing equal career opportunities for all, supporting the professional development of women researchers, and promoting work-life balance for everyone at RWTH.
A University for All: Equal Opportunities in Research, Teaching, and Careers
Women researchers are vital to the success of our academic community. Their expertise, talents, and qualifications contribute significantly to our endeavors in research and teaching. We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment that ensures equal opportunities for all. By promoting the visibility of women academics and challenging discriminatory practices, we aim to create a more equitable and just workplace. RWTH’s Diversity Strategy is a key cornerstone of our efforts.
Through education and awareness-raising initiatives, we strive to stimulate open dialogue and break down entrenched thought patterns. Together, we can shape a brighter future for science by challenging the status quo and embracing a more inclusive and forward-thinking approach.
An Advanced Academic Degree but Discriminated Against?
Women researchers often face discriminatory behavior, from disparaging remarks to gender-specific prejudice. Stereotypes and biases continue to hinder their progress, questioning their competence and judging their appearance. At RWTH, we actively oppose all forms of discrimination and exclusion.
A Culture of Safety and Respect
We are committed to protecting researchers who have experienced discrimination. RWTH offers specialized support and advice through dedicated contact points and trained personnel. By raising awareness and promoting respectful behavior, we aim to prevent such incidents from occurring in the first place.
Our goal is to establish a workplace where everyone feels valued and respected. Mutual respect is the cornerstone of our collaboration and an essential aspect of our daily interactions.
„Women researchers often bear the primary responsibility for advocating for gender equality. However, we have repeatedly demonstrated our capacity to do more than this.“
Discrimination has many facets. The Equal Opportunities Office offers confidential, independent, and professional advice on all types and causes of discrimination. We are here to accompany, advise, and support you.
Furthermore, we are committed to preventing and addressing issues such as sexual harassment, discrimination, and bias. Treating everyone with fairness and respect is a fundamental value at our institution. Our services include workshops, presentations, and informational resources on gender equality, anti-racism, and work-life balance.
Equal Research, Unequal Opportunities
Women researchers often face unique challenges compared to their male counterparts. Their work is cited less frequently, their contributions are less visible, and they are less likely to secure funding, receive conference invitations, or win awards. Despite their exceptional qualifications, women scientists frequently lack the recognition they deserve.
These disparities contribute to the “leaky pipeline effect,” where the number of women in academic positions declines at each career stage after obtaining a doctorate.
We are actively working to address these issues by systematically dismantling structural barriers, raising awareness among decision-makers, and providing support and mentorship to our women researchers.
„I would encourage everyone to identify their own strengths within this vast field and to focus on developing them.“
We Are Taking Action for a Brighter Future
Support women researchers in building successful careers and work to identify and remove structural barriers at RWTH. By doing so, we are specifically increasing the proportion of women in management positions.
Career paths are as unique as the individuals who walk them. Our offerings include tailored training programs, personalized career advice, and mentoring opportunities. We also prioritize networking, recognizing its value in sharing information, receiving feedback, and building visibility.
Family or Career?
Traditional gender roles often burden women with caregiving responsibilities, making it challenging to reconcile family and career aspirations. This can significantly hinder women's career advancement, contributing to the 'leaky pipeline' phenomenon.
Existing structures within science and research often fail to accommodate the needs of working parents. The Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act can result in precarious employment situations and impede long-term planning, adding to the challenges faced by families. This uncertainty, combined with outdated stereotypes and biases, means that many women continue to grapple with the difficult choice between family and career.

Our Goal: Achieving Work-Family Balance.
We empower parents and family caregivers by offering comprehensive support services that foster equal career opportunities.
Our wide range of services includes personalized advice, flexible work arrangements, tailored part-time options, and assistance with childcare. We are committed to creating a family-friendly workplace that facilitates a balance between career and family life while promoting career growth for academics with family responsibilities.
Just ‘Women’s Issues’?
Many scientific fields continue to be dominated by male networks. STEM subjects, in particular, are often perceived as male domains. The dynamics of communication and power within these fields can create barriers for women, discouraging them from pursuing careers in science. Additionally, there are too few female role models for young women in science to look up to.
At RWTH, we are actively challenging traditional structures by increasing the visibility of female scientists, fostering women's networks, and cultivating support for gender equality at all levels of the scientific community.
Opportunities for Networking and Exchange
Our networks prioritize exchange, mutual support, and discussions on relevant career topics. Platforms like LinkedIn facilitate networking and dialogue anytime, anywhere, as exemplified by the Women of RWTH group.
TANDEM Mentoring Programs
The TANDEM mentoring for women students, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral researchers have been a cornerstone of the University for over two decades. As essential tools for promoting equal opportunity and fostering organizational development, these programs support the advancement of individual careers while actively addressing the 'leaky pipeline' phenomenon.
Promoting Careers and Building Networks
Initiatives aimed at strengthening and advancing the careers of women researchers are essential for dismantling structural barriers and creating a more equitable academic environment.
Institutionalizing Equal Opportunities
The promotion of equal opportunities is deeply ingrained within the University’s institutional structures. Various mandates champion a diversity perspective, including the Vice-Rector for Human Resources Management; the Gender and Diversity Management Staff Unit (IGaD); and the Equal Opportunities Office (GSB).
